The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (subclass 482) is an Australian work visa that allows employers to address labor shortages by sponsoring skilled workers from overseas to fill positions they cannot source locally. It is designed to be a temporary solution to meet immediate skill demands.


Key Details About the TSS Visa

Visa Streams

  1. Short-Term Stream

    • For occupations listed on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
    • Valid for up to 2 years (or up to 4 years if an international trade obligation applies).
    • May have limited pathways to permanent residency.
  2. Medium-Term Stream

    • For occupations listed on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).
    • Valid for up to 4 years.
    • Provides a pathway to permanent residency after 3 years through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) subclass 186.
  3. Labour Agreement Stream

    • For skilled workers nominated under a labour agreement between the employer and the Australian government.
    • Valid for varying periods depending on the agreement.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Employer Requirements

    • Must be an approved sponsor.
    • Demonstrate genuine need for the nominated role and efforts to hire locally before seeking overseas workers.
    • Nominate an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list.
  2. Employee Requirements

    • Be nominated for an eligible skilled occupation.
    • Possess the required skills, qualifications, and work experience for the role.
    • Meet English language proficiency requirements.
    • Be under 45 years of age (exceptions may apply for specific streams).
    • Meet health and character requirements.

Application Process

  1. Sponsorship Application (Employer)

    • The employer must apply to become an approved sponsor.
  2. Nomination Application (Employer)

    • Submit a nomination application for the skilled worker and provide details about the role.
  3. Visa Application (Employee)

    • The employee submits their visa application, including proof of skills, English proficiency, and other relevant documents.
